Pleasure
and Pain
by Aristippus
There are only two states of the soul, namely
pleasure and pain. Pleasure is a soft and easy
motion. Pain is a rough and violent one. There is
no other pleasure than that of the body. No
pleasure is more pleasant than another one. But a
pleasure may be composed of a multitude of
elementary pleasures. Pleasure is agreeable, and
pain is repellent to all living creatures.
