Re: A Philosophy of Education from a Christian Perspective

The Radical Academy received an e-mail from Michael in Kansas requesting some help with the history and philosophy of education, especially as it relates to Christian education. Here is the text of his e-mail:

Can you give me some guidance on the history of a philosophy of education and how to develop a Philosophy of Education from a Christian perspective? What are the basic philosophies of education? How would you clasify them? Hope to hear from you. I enjoy you site.

Here is Dr. Dolhenty's reply.

Thank you, Michael, for your e-mail. Let me begin, however, to say that I can't possibly answer your questions in any detail without writing a philosophy of education book myself. The subject is just too large. And, unfortunately, we do not provide that kind of personal research service. So let me point you to some books that might help. The ones listed here, of course, are just a fraction of those available. However, they might get you started. If you don't want to purchase them, check out your local library.

These are "general" philosophy of education texts with which I am familiar since I either used them as a student or as a teacher. They are dated, of course, but do cover the subject. They are not specifically "Christian," but will give you an idea of the problems raised within philosophy of education.

Philosophies of Education, by Philip H. Phenix

Philosophies of Education in Cultural Perspective, by Theodore Brameld

Philosophy and the American School, by Van Cleve Morris

These are books related to philosophy of education from a Christian perspective. These appear to be the four most popular books within the field. I am not personally familiar with all of them, but they have been recommend to me. And they are relatively recent publications.

Philosophy and Education, by George R. Knight

Exploring the History and Philosophy of Christian Education, by Michael J. Anthony

Philosophy of Education: Issues and Options, by Michael L. Peterson

Theological Approaches to Christian Education, by Jack L. Seymour

There are probably many more books out there that would answer your questions or satisfy your curiosity. These, hopefully, will get your started on your philosophical quest.

Best regards,

Jonathan Dolhenty, Ph.D.
