Henry James (1843-1916): American-born British novelist, short-story writer and critic, he settled in England in 1869 and became a British citizen in 1914, after the outbreak of World War I. Much of his work is concerned with the contrast between American innocence and the older, wiser European culture and with the minutiae of Edwardian upper-class life.
