Jack London (1876-1916): Pseudonym of John Griffith Chaney, an American novelist, born in San Francisco, California. Deserted by his father, he educated himself at public libraries, gained admission to the University of California, but left to seek his fortune in the Klondike gold rush (1897). He is best known for his adventure stories.
