Thomas Hardy (1840-1928): An English novelist, short-story writer and poet, whose novels are set for the most part in his native Dorset, his "Wessex." Censorship of his novels by magazines led to him abandoning the novel for poetry. He is now ranked, with Eliot and Yeats, as one of the three great modern poets in English.
