Victor Hugo (1802-1885): A French novelist, dramatist and poet, whose play Hernani (1830), a highly romantic, unconventional poetic drams, was marked by inflamed squabbles between supporters and opponents of the new, formally looser and more socially challenging drama. The ensuing controversy established him as the leader of the French literary Romantics. Some of his novels have been made into films, several times.
