(1850-1894): A Scottish novelist, poet and
essayist, he trained as an advocate in Edinburgh,
but decided in his twenties to be a writer. By the
time his first important fictional work,
Treasure Island (1883), had been published
he had established himself as an author of note
with essays, poems and two travel books. He
eventually settled in Samoa, where he died. The
Samoan nickname for him was "Tusitala," which means
the "Storyteller." Kidnapped,
