The mission of the Claremont Institute is to restore the principles of the American Founding to their rightful, preeminent authority in our national life. The Claremont Institute finds the answers to America's problems in the principles on which our nation was founded. These principles are expressed most eloquently in the Declaration of Independence, which proclaims that "all men are created equal and are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights...." To recover the Founding principles in our political life means recovering a limited and accountable government that respects private property, promotes stable family life and maintains a strong defense. For more information, visit The Claremont Institute Website. The following books are by scholars attached to the Claremont Institute.

No Victory, No Peace, by Angelo M. Codevilla

If you have not read any of Codevilla's writings, get this book. His views are absolutely essential to an understanding of whether the war is being appropriately prosecuted.

The Progressive Revolution in Politics and Political Science, by John Marini

The Progressive Revolution in Politics and Political Science explores the scope, ambition, and effect of the Progressive revolution of a century ago, which relegated the theory and practice of the Founders to an antiquated historical phase. By contrast, our contributors see beyond the horizon of Progressivism to take account of the Founders' moral and political premises and illuminate its effects on our political science and political practice today. It is a study in political philosophy, intellectual history, and current political understanding.

A New Birth of Freedom, by Harry Jaffa

A New Birth of Freedom is the culmination of over a half a century of study and reflection by one of America's foremost scholars of American politics, Harry V. Jaffa. This long-awaited sequel to Crisis of the House Divided, first published in 1959, continues Jaffa's piercing examination of the political thought of Abraham Lincoln and the themes of self-government, equality, and statesmanship. Whereas Crisis of the House Divided focused on the famous senate campaign debates between Lincoln and Stephen Douglas, this volume expands and deepens Jaffa's analysis of American political thought, and gives special attention to Lincoln's refutation of the arguments of John C. Calhoun-the intellectual champion of the Confederacy.

Vindicating the Founders, by Thomas G. West

Mr. West points out that the principle of equality itself has two parts that often conflict. One is equal rights; but among those rights is the right of consent to government. The trouble is that through prejudice people may not accord equal rights to others; yet the right of consent belongs just as much to people with prejudice as to the enlightened.... In our age of self-expression, the worst accusation you can face is being unfaithful to yourself. That is why personal attack, always a danger in a democracy, so often today replaces serious argument over principle, as in the debate over the Founders and their alleged hypocrisy. Mr. West reminds us that our "self" is mainly constituted by our principles.
