Auguste Comte (1798-1857) was the
founder of modern sociology. His objective
was the reform of society and to achieve
this end he contended for a positive
social science, and worked at it
throughout his life. He argued that the
theology and philosophy of the Middle Ages
represented primitive thought. The new
natural sciences indicated that a new
social science should be built on
observation and experience (positive
knowledge). He is a classic example of
modern positivist philosophy.
