Charles Sanders Peirce (1839-1914) was
the formulator of the principles of
pragmatism. He regards pragmatism as a
method of clarifying conceptions. The
complete definition of any concept is the
totality of the experimental occurrences
implied in that concept by logical
meaning. Peirce later invented the term
"pragmaticism" to differentiate his
position from that of William James, who
had adopted the term "pragmatism" and used
it in his own way.
