A History of Knowledge: The Pivotal Events, People and Achievements of World History

A knowledge of the intellectual history of man and the ideas which have shaped civilization is vitally important to everyone. For one thing, it prevents us from becoming myopic about what is occurring in the world today. We need to keep things in perspective and quit reacting as if all the troubles we human beings have today are unique. The technology we deal with may be new, but the problems we have using it (and misusing it!) are as old as mankind itself. This general history of ideas by Charles Van Doren is highly recommended to everyone.

An Enduring Classic! Never Out of Print!

"Durant's The Story of Philosophy is a classical work first printed in the 1920s and still in print today. I have two copies: a new one I bought some years ago AND a 1926 edition of this great work (I don't lend the latter copy to anyone!)." J.D.

Another classic

"This is a fairly good history of philosophy for the beginning student of philosophy. It is not without interpretive error, however. Lord Russell does not seem to understand Thomistic realism or the world in which medieval scholasticism developed." J.D.

An excellent history
of medieval philosophy
