Gabriel Marcel (1889-1973) is a
representative of French existentialism.
He studied philosophy at the Sorbonne, but
made his living as a freelance writer,
teacher, editor, and critic. In 1929 he
bacame a Catholic, and came reluctantly to
accept the lavel "Christian
existentialist," partly in order to
contrast his views with those of another
French existentialist, Jean-Paul Sarte,
who represented an atheistic
existentialism.
