A nationally renowned attorney and
director of Freedom to Marry, Wolfson
hails the movement for marriage equality
as "one of the first important civil
rights campaigns of the 21st century" and
grounds support for it within the logic of
the long-established protest traditions in
U.S. history: abolition, the women's
suffrage movement and the racial equality
movements of the 1950s and '60s.
Gay Marriage: Why It Is Good for
Gays, Good for Straights, and Good for
America, by Jonathan Rauch
Suddenly, there seems to be an
avalanche of books about the gay-marriage
issue appearing in America's bookstores.
There is little doubt now that the
controversy over granting legal marriages
to gay persons is snowballing and has
become the hot topic of the times.
Jonathan Rauch's book is another
contribution to the debate and, to his
credit, he does provide a slightly
different slant on the issue from what
I've read in other books.

The Gay
Marriage Issue
Civil Wars: A Battle for Gay
Marriage, by David Moats
David Moats is the editorial page
editor of the Rutland Herald who
won a Pulitzer Prize for his editorials in
support of gay marriage. Civil
Wars, his book on the subject, reads
more like a novel in the thriller genre
than a nonfictional account of the
judicial and legislative battle over
same-sex unions which occurred in the
state of Vermont in 2000. In that year the
"Green Mountain State" became the first
state to grant gay and lesbian couples the
right to join in civil unions. In the
Prologue to his book, Moats asks the
question: "How did such a thing happen in
Vermont?" The rest of the book is devoted
to providing an answer.

Women in the
Military
Women in the Military: flirting with
disaster
"Reporter and journalist Brian Mitchell
has gathered the facts and just published
a book detailing the whole sorry mess of
women in the military. He and his book are
guaranteed to be controversial. If you are
interested in the women-military issue,
you need to read his new book. You can get
more information about it and/or order the
book by clicking on the title below. A
retired Air Force officer I know is
incensed over the material contained
within it." Jon Dolhenty
ABORTION: The
issue that will not go away
The Hand of God: A Journey from
Death to Life by the Abortion Doctor Who
Changed His Mind
"Dr. Bernard N. Nathanson was
co-founder in 1969 of the National
Association for the Repeal of Abortion
Laws (NARAL). He was also the director of
the largest abortion clinic in the world.
Now, Dr. Nathanson has made an about-face
and has become one of the leading
opponents of abortion. He has written a
book to explain why. And it is certainly
worth reading! He details the deceptions,
dirty tricks, and other tactics that
helped make abortion legal and socially
acceptable. I know some of which he writes
because I was actively involved in the
abortion controversy before it became
legal. I and my colleagues in the
anti-abortion movement lost the cause, of
course, but the fight rages on. The
arguments are now clearly on the side of
those opposing abortion since new
scientific research has completely
demolished virtually all of the prime
arguments used to defend this hideous
practice. Whatever position you take, this
book will enlighten you." Jon

Healing the
Culture presents the most
comprehensive philosophy of the pro-life
movement in print today.
This book changes the discussion on
abortion and euthanasia by linking these
issues with the philosophical
underpinnings of our culture and the
principles and values through which we
live. More than an explanation of the life
issues, this book presents a course in
philosophy and a guide to enhanced meaning
and purpose in life. This groundbreaking
work addresses the connection between the
culture's view of everything from
happiness and success, to self-worth,
love, suffering, ethics, freedom and
personhood, and shows how our notion of
personhood holds the key not only to the
concept of ourselves, but also to the
future of rights and the common good.
Father Spitzer, President of Gonzaga
University, has been using the principles
in this book over the last eight years to
educate people of all backgrounds in the
philosophy of the pro-life movement. The
tremendous positive response he has
received inspired him to start the Center
for Life Principles. This book is one of
the key resources used for this
program.
