Terrorism & the Attack on America - Page 1

The September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon is causing some consternation among philosophical Objectivists, Libertarians of all stripes, and political Conservatives and modern Liberals as well. We are trying to reflect these differing opinions by offering the links below.

Objectivists and followers of Ayn Rand...

The Assault on Civilization, by David Kelley -- Executive Director, The Objectivist Center: "The United States and its allies must cease the policy of trying to counter terrorism by negotiation. Negotiation is an exercise of reason that civilized people use to resolve their differences. We are not dealing with civilized people. We must cease the policy of excusing their violence by their poverty and trying to buy them off with subsidies. We are not dealing with people who seek such gain. We must declare war on the terrorists and use whatever force it takes to render them incapable of posing any further threat."

Fifty Years of Appeasement Led to Black Tuesday, by Leonard Peikoff -- The Ayn Rand Institute: "To those who oppose war, I ask: If not now, when? How many more corpses are necessary before this country should take action? The choice today is mass death in the United States or mass death in the terrorist nations. President Bush must decide whether it is his duty to save Americans or the governments who seek to kill them."

A response to the above...

Randians for Mass Murder, by Milton Batiste: "David Kelley is the executive director of The Objectivist Center, celebrated in some libertarian circles as a forum for moderate randianism. This is what Kelley has to say about the response to the acts...Kelley is advocating war with 'whatever force it takes' against enemies who are less than human (not 'civilized people'). This is the voice of the reasonable Objectivist faction. What about the unreasonable faction? Leonard Peikoff -- the 'intellectual heir' of Ayn Rand -- is the founder of The Ayn Rand Institute, the fountainhead of orthodox Objectivism. His reaction is -- unsurprisingly -- similiar to Kelley's, but even more indiscriminate. Americas enemies, it seems, are Arabs in general..."

Libertarians and Classical Liberals...

What is the libertarian response to this tragedy? What are prominent libertarians saying about it? What can I personally do? To help answer these and similar questions, the Advocates for Self-Government has created a special crisis Web page of statements, resources, and suggested activities. The Web address for the new crisis page: http://www.theadvocates.org/terrorism.html.

Libertarian Splits in the War on Terrorism, by Jacob G. Hornberger: Responses to the September 11 attacks have split the libertarian movement like no other issue I have seen since I discovered libertarianism almost 25 years ago.

From the New York Times

A special section, America Attacks, provides access to both recent and past coverage of the tragedy, including archived articles on Osama Bin Laden. This section also contains photos and videos, and links to forums where readers can share their thoughts. Also see the Magazine, which has had two issues dealing with the terrorist crisis and the Week in Review, which has very penetrating articles.

In an effort to help teachers and parents guide students in understanding the events and impact of the September 11 terrorist attacks, The New York Times Learning Network offers an array of lesson plans based on Times articles and photos; links to articles just for those working with children; Web links; and an opportunity for students to share their thoughts.

On Future Attacks...

"Future Attack Against the U.S. Almost Certain"...Vice President Dick Cheney appeared on Meet the Press and FoxNews Sunday to discuss threats to the U.S. that appear inevitable. "In my opinion, prospects of a future attack against the United States are almost certain," Cheney said on NBC's "Meet the Press." "We don't know if it's going to be tomorrow or next week or next year," he said, adding that it was "not a matter of if, but when." See: http://www.msnbc.com/news/754033.asp and http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,53155,00.html.

The terrorist attacks of September 11 struck at the very heart of the American homeland. It has put all Americans on notice that the United States is dangerously vulnerable and that new means are urgently needed to strengthen the security of the homeland. The Heritage Foundation Homeland Security Task force was formed days after the September 11 attacks to meet this urgent need. Their comprehensive study incorporates the recommendations of the Task Force; including steps necessary to strengthen America's infrastructure, civil defenses, intelligence capabilities, and armed forces.
